In der Anfangszeit der Textilgroßhandlung Swafing  konnte Swafing-Gründer Johann Swafing in der wasserreichen Textilstadt Nordhorn die vielen ansässigen Textilfabriken und Webereien zu Fuß erreichen, um dort die besten Tücher und Stoffe anzukaufen und diese an seine Kunden zu vertreiben.

Heute ist sein Sohn, Hans-Gerd Swafing mit seinem Team in der Tradition des Firmengründers weltweit unterwegs, um Trendstoffe, Modestoffe und Basics in hoher Qualität und Vielfalt anbieten zu können. So auch auf dem zweimal im Jahr abgehaltenen International Quilt Market Pittsburgh, USA. Dort zeigen Hunderte von Ausstellern ihre Stoffe, Schnittmuster und weiteren Handarbeitsbedarf.

 Time was, when Swafing’s founder, Johann Swafing, could drive, even walk from mill to mill in the regional textile industry cluster of Nordhorn, Germany, to find the finest fabrics to offer the home sewing market. Today, his son, Hans-Gerd Swafing, and his team travel the globe to maintain the founder’s commitment to bring quality and variety to today’s creative home.  Recently, the Swafing team could be found at the International Quilt Market in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, USA. The International Quilt Market is a twice-yearly to- the-trade show featuring hundreds of exhibitors representing the best of American crafting fabric.

Der Name lässt darauf schließen: Der Messeschwerpunkt liegt auf den traditionellen amerikanischen Handwerkskünsten Quilten und Patchwork. Das Quilten entstand aus der Notwendigkeit, keinen Fitzel Stoff zu verschwenden und auch alte Kleidung einem neuen Zweck zuzuführen. Nichtsdestotrotz verstehen sich die Hersteller vorzüglich darauf, vielfältige neue Stoffe für Quilts, aber auch für Taschen, Röcke oder Kissen anzubieten. Neben den beliebten Baumwolldrucken und Popeline-Stoffen waren in diesem Jahr auch leichte Segeltücher, Canvas und Batiststoffe sowie Bordürenstoffe zu sehen.

Traditionelle nordamerikanische Quiltstoffe dominieren den Markt. Ein deutlicher Trend zu klaren Blumenmustern und geometrischen Formen der 20er und 30er Jahre sowie Anlehnungen an die Echo Deco-Ära der 50er und 70er Jahre waren spürbar. Weiter in vielen Variaten zu finden: Chevronmuster, auch mit abgerundeten Spitzen oder im Colour-Blocking Look. Waldmotive spielen weiter eine wichtige Rolle und so nisten sich auch in der kommenden Zeit wieder Füchse, Eulen und Igel in vielen Stoffregalen ein.

 As the name makes no bones, the Quilt Market focuses heavily on materials and products for the distinctly American craft of quilting. In a nod to patchwork quilting’s origins – namely, not letting any bit of scrap fabric go to waste – today’s quilting suppliers understand that these fabrics might very well likely be stitched up into purses, pillows, skirts and the like before, or if ever made into a quilt. As such, a few innovators were presenting border prints, cotton lawns, light- weight canvas and linen-like broadcloth. 

Since quilting has such a very deep-rooted heritage in North America, many of the fabrics on view had a distinct antebellum look and feel. On the other hand, the aesthetic magnetic north of the show seemed to point to both the clear calicos, distinct florals and art deco geometrics of the 1920s and 1930s, as well as the “echo-deco” era of the 1950s and 1970s. Chevron stripes seem to keep their hold, but in slight variation, for example, with rounded points for a wavy look or with vertical color-blocking, lending a somewhat Southwestern appeal. Woodland motifs continue to have their following and you can expect to see more foxes, hedgehogs and owls nesting happily in your sewing stash.

Der Rüschenhocker „Petticoat Pouf“ war auf der Messe vielbewundertes „Statement Piece“ und auch die tierfreundliche Stoff-Trophäe Deer John fand bei den Besuchern großen Anklang.

Riley Blake’s partnership with Amanda Herring of Quilted Fish brings a good dose of vibrant style and happy panáche. Amanda’s fluffy, ruffled pouf is one of many head- turning projects this innovative designer offers this year.
